an apple a day

i went to the doctor today. it was kind of awkward because i am 19 and still going to a pediactric place. there were little kids everywhere and i, theoretically, could have kids. they gave me a shot today, the second and last of my hep a shots. it hurt considerably. my only consolation was getting a snoopy band aid.

the countdown begins...

as of today, i have only one month left until i leave for berkeley. i remember thinking that this moment seemed so far away and all of a sudden it snuck up on me. one month left. thirty-one days. 744 hours. it really isn't that much in the scheme of things. and i know it's going to just fly by. only so much time left with the people that i love. only so much time for normalcy. i can't even fathom how different my life is going to be in a matter of weeks. i'm astounded, dazzled and scare. last night, my dad asked me to stay home and go to UW. i have to admit, i considered his request for a few minutes. but just as i am resisting the though of leaving and accepting change, a part of me knows it is time. i'm so overdue compared to the everyone else, but i don't think i'm spoiled yet. just ripe enough for the taking.

sooner or later this cold, it's gonna break and our words'll be heard again

~sigh~. yet another day where sean and i have not spoken a word to each other. another day where he didn't call when he said he would. another day where i couldn't get a hold of him, if even to just say hello, because (big surprise), his cellphone was not charged. you'd think incidences like these would become more sporadic as our time together grows increasingly shorter. but no. they actually seem to be increasing. what i find most interesting and unsual about this usual day is the fact that i'm not seething with anger like i usually am. perhaps it is because i am exhausted. or perhaps it is because an overwhelming sense of disappointment has hegemony over my other emotions. it's amazing what you will put up with time and time again for someone that you love. this, my friends, is the sound of settling. sean was right to say that i shouldn't have to just settle for the way things are. in fact, neither of us should. but i have come to suspect that settling for the way things are is perhaps the single greatest and most diffcult thing you can do for someone you truly care for.

two class periods left...

oh how i am counting down the hours to my freedom from community college.

today, jeff (a.k.a. pill snorter) told us about how he "would''t be able to sit through class if i didn't smoke a bowl every morning." which got me thinking 1) hmmmm that explains a lot about you and 2) i know he's talking about weed, but what i am unsure of is what precisely a bowl is. hold on one moment, i will ask someone knowledgable..........ahhhh okay. so bowl refers to the bowl piece on a pipe or bong, so a bowl is a piece of bud about that size. i'm sure all you reading knew that, but i needed clarification.

anyway, i only have an essay, 30 minute group presentation and 2 class periods left. it's so close i can taste it.

and speaking of taste, my teachers brought us cookies and juice today. of course there was that one guy who grabbed like three cookies at once and looked like a total greedy little bastard. and one of the apple juices smelled funny and kinda tasted like pee. I asked the guy setting next to me, ryan, if he thought it smelled funny and he told me that it smelled like normal apple juice and that maybe it just wasn't good enough for my tastes. perhaps he was right, but i think most people dislike the taste of piss.

i think if i could be anyone in the whole world, right now i'd have to go with beyonce. seriously, have you SEEN the video for lose my breath? screw those other two chicks, i don't even know their names. and frankly, next to beyonce, they look like a bunch of prepubescent girls attempting to be sexy cheerleaders, which i find quite disturbing. all i really care about is beyonce having a dance-off with her bad self. good god! as if one beyonce isn't enough to blow your mind, then they have two!! i had to rub my eyes to make sure i wasn't seeing double. and her hair, it's got a mind of it's own. her hair alone could dance the pants off janet jackson. i am amazed. utterly amazed.

credit where credit's due

i never give sean any credit for being the sweet guy that he is. it's so easy for me to focus on petty shit (a trait i undoubtedly picked up from my wonderful father). the fact is, i couldn't ask for a sweeter boyfriend than sean. he's always consoling me and trying to make me happy and sometimes all he gets back is a mean look. i honestly don't know how he puts up with me and i'm so so so so SO lucky to have him. mushy, i know. but blame him, not me. he's the wonderful one.

love, angel, music, baby

if you want some feel good 80's throwback dance music, then Gwen's new album is most definitely for you. i went to circuit city to get it yesterday and i've been listening to it nonstop (p.s. circuit city is the place to buy cds. love, angel, music, babe was only 8.99 and i think the new u2 album is 8.99 there too. circuit city rocks). L.A.M.B. takes off from where Rock Steady left off. The first half the CD is surprisingly different than the second half. The cd starts off very hip-hop inspired with tracks produced by Dr. Dre, the Neptunes and Andre 3000 (under the guise of Johnny Vulture). The Neptunes, "Hollaback Girl," is my favorite song right now. It's got a fatty beat that the neptunes are so well known for. Right up there is "Bubble Pop Electric," produced and co-written by Johnny Vulture. It's super catchy and super fun song that would make a really good next single. The latter half of the cd is blatantly 80s inspired, especially the tracks produced by Tony. If you didn't know any better, you'd swear the songs were straight out of the 80s. Under any other circumstance, 80s throwback would be a very very bad thing and i simply wouldn't stand for it. But afterall, Gwen's genius results in pure danceable enjoyment. The only song that hasn't quite grown on me is "Harajuku Girls." There's just too much talking in it and japanese. It's pretty obvious that gwen has developed some kind of obession with all things japanese. Other than having an entire song dedicated to them, Harajuku girls are mentioned in at least 2 other songs.

All in all, love angel music baby is better than i was anticipating. Gwen's songs are really sexed-up and catchy. She really stretchs the capabilities of her voice and her musical style. She's come a long way from just a girl and i have to say i like where she's ended up.

all i want is not to need you now

i never thought i'd get to this point, but it seems that i have. i have finally arrived at the point where i feel like i am ready to leave. i have a hunch that this will be just a short phase induced by exasperating loneliness, but hey it's not such a bad place to be. i'm just so ready to have friends again. my world is very small and lonely right now. i suppose i should have seen it coming. community college was not the best idea considering i don't like most normal people. i was completely naive about having a boyfriend in high school. i expect far too much from him. afterall, he isn't even 18 yet. as much as i want to deny it, we are in such different places right now and maybe we always will be?? i don't i know i am just so torn. i don't want to leave my home and my family and sean, but at the same time i'm just so ready for change. i'm done with this horrible limbo - no longer in high school and not quite in college. i just need to belong somewhere, people to hang out with, my own life.

drink yourself stupid

if there is anything to be learned about being the sole sober person, it is the fact that no one, not even those who claim to love you most, will watch out for you except for yourself. in fact, the people who claim to love you most will probably be the people you will have to watch after, in addition to yourself. that, my friends, is the power of the ignorant fluid. and they call it ignorant fluid for a reason.

oh and another thing i learned is that someone who is ridiculously high is much more helpful than a passed out drunk. so i should stop ragging on the stoners. at least they are conscious.

the dollar spot

so i've discovered that i'll pretty much buy anything that only costs a dollar. it doesn't really matter if i need it or not or even if it's useful at that present time. the mere fact that it costs only a dollar will convince me to buy it. isn't that awful? it is both awful and precisely the reason that i love target. they have "the dollar spot" where everything is...well a dollar. like today, i got underwear that has the tootsie pops logo on it. i don't really need underwear, but it was only a dollar and had a cool logo on it. but i guess that's not really a good example because i have an underwear obsession. i love to buy underwear, especially from target.

actually, i take back everything i just said. i will buy pretty much anything that is at target.

guess who got to see death cab for cutie tuesday night at the paramount? yeah, that would be yours truly. uh huh, uh huh, uh huh uh huh uh huh.

i was able to tear sean away from his overwhelmingly busy high school schedule by buying him a ticket (a consolation prize for the premature and unfortunate end of his football season). we decided to make like old people and sit rather than stand in the crowd, which grew to considerable size after the opening act, pretty girls make graves, who were awful, terribly awful. never see them in concert. you will want to kill yourself, because they should really leave their genre to the yeah yeah yeahs, cuz at least they know what they're doing and karen o is the fucking shiznit.

ANYWAY!!!!!!! Death Cab was fucking AWESOME. I can't remember what they opened with, only that it was not from Transatlanticism. From the aforementioned album they played (in no particular order): sound of settling, lack of color, tiny vessels (which i never liked until i heard it live), license and registration, we looked like giants, the lightness, new year, expo '86, and even transatlanticism! I just realized it, but the only song off that album that they didn't play was death of an interior decorator, which just happens to be my favorite song. figures. but i still love ben. i wanted to get there hella early so that i could be in front because i'm very short and would not be able to see otherwise. but if for no other reason, i wanted to be up front so that ben gibbard could sweat on me. as you can imagine, sean was not too keen on that idea.

as always, death cab was in immaculate form. their drumming sounded like studio, if you didn't know any better (or were ashlee simpson) you'd think the drumming was pre-recorded. the lighting was surprisingly different and highly effective. they had lights on the sides of the stage that lit up the filigreed walls on either side of the stage. one of the coolest moments was when they played "movie script ending" and there was one bright light shining out right behind the drum, so there was the silohuette of the bass drum and the bright light so it totally looked like a train coming down a tunnel (and for those of you who don't know the song...the drums are supposed to sound like a train and ben is singing about how the sound that the train is always making). it made me grin with glee and i wondered if anyone else was picking up on their nuance.

another outstanding song was "photobooth." it was a really rocked out version, which i had never heard before. i've heard acoustic photobooth, studio photobooth and now rocked out photobooth. however, my favorite song of the set was a song i had never heard before, and i couldn't really understand any of the lyrics so i couldn't search for the song. i have since discovered that the song is called "amputations" and it is a totally awesome song with a totally sweet drumline.

inbetween songs, ben talked about the election and how disappointed he was. they played the song they made for the move on cd and dedicated it to 2008.

the best part of the whole night, though, was the encore, because they brought out fucking eddie vedder. EDDIE VEDDER. eddie vedder came out on stage and played a song with them. he sang AND had a hella tight guitar solo. sean and i were freaking out like little kids. we got to see death cab for cutie play with eddie vedder. how wild is that. afterward, ben said "I wish I could tell my 14 year old self what my 28 year old self is doing."

all in all, it was a really fantastic concert. death cab always delivers.

here are some links to much better reviews of the concert

radio killed the video star

...if by video star i mean sofie. Did you know that there is NO good music played on the radio? I've been driving my mom's car lately and it doesn't have a CD player, so I'm forced to listen to the radio. NPR is great in the morning but after being talked at in school and at work, I just want to hear something good that I can sing along to. But noooooooooooo. It's just the same crap over and over again, followed by commericals and more crap. That is the evil of concentrated media ownership and record label payola. MTV is running this rap shit and they don't even play music on their channel anymore.

But you know what, it's all going to be okay, because tomorrow, I am going to go buy the new Handsome Boy Modeling School cd and it is going to be musical bliss. It will be fantastic, because I can go out and buy it and....not be able to listen to it in the car because THERE IS NO CD PLAYER. FUCK (BUSH).

Oh but there is one saving grace in radio. And that's oldies stations. Have you ever thought about how on oldies stations you know the words to all the songs? And it's not even like they're playing the same songs over and over again. Think about how many lyrics you have just sitting around in your brain.

I am APPALLED that the people at the Quizon's next to my work, where I get lunch every Sunday and sporadically during the week, do not know my order yet (regular veggie on wheat no dressing, onions or peppers). And I just realized that I forgot to get my Quizno's card stamped. DAMNIT. Hey, ten stamps and I get 5 bucks off my next purchase. I've befriended the one Quizno's chick who isn't hispanic and she gives me two stamps even though I think I'm only supposed to get one. Sad, I don't even know two-stamping-Quizno-girl's name. She is nice and goes to SAS. Anyway, back to the other Quiznos ladies. So they don't know my order. But perhaps the worse offense is the fact that they do NOT EVER SMILE. These women are like androids, I'm telling you. Perhaps it is their lack of mastery of the english language that makes them frown so. Who knows? self fulfilled prophecy

Yeah, so it did end up being one of the worst birthdays in all of birthday history. Okay, I guess it wasn't that bad...no one died, I didn't die, all my limbs are intact, etc. But George Bush was reelected president, and that's almost as bad if not worse than the other things I mentioned. All i can say is that I am gravely disappointed with our country. Gay marriage banned in ELEVEN states??? What century are we liviing in? I'm not going to editorialize because it's exhausting. My ass is so sore from climbing up and down a ladder at work that I wouldn't be able to get on my soap box. Yeah, I climbed a ladder for three hours yesterday at work. And I thought working at Claudia's (formerly) floral, gifts and home furnishings would be easy. Well generally it is, but I had to put things up on display ledges and hang oversized ornaments from the ceiling. We had Christmas up before Halloween. In fact, we had Halloween, Thanksgiving AND Christmas up before Halloween. And the weirder thing is, as far as the retail world is concerned, we put our Christmas stuff up LATE. It's madness, I tell you, pure madness. But yeah, so I spend three hours climbing up a ladder, hanging up 4 foot tall ornaments (I shit you not, if you live around here, you should seriously come check it out and marvel and the ingenuity of man). I had to do all this because Claudia is allegedly scared of heights. I'm beginning to think it's all a ploy to get me to do all the grunt work. I'm not so much miffed about ladder climbing, because I think it did my ass some good. What I'm miffed about is the fact that Claudia had me do all that and she didn't even take the trash and recycling out. Shizah! But complaints aside, my job is pretty low key and easy. It's certianly better than flipping burgers or pissing people off as a telemarketer. Whenever you're hating your life, it's always good to think that there could be worse things. Unless you're a telemarketer.

media madness

So...I'm taking this class at Cascadia (Gender Inc.: The Construction of Sex and Gender in a Media Rich Society) and today we watched this video about the media's portrayal of women. I've never really stopped and taken the time to deconstruct the images that we're being bombarded with. Advertising is so ubiquitous that you don't even realize it's there and that it's having an affect on you, whether you like it or not. Anywho, so we were talking about how all media tells a story and advertising doesn't just tell you a story about a pair of jeans or men's cologne, but what it really tells us is a story about ourselves. And we talked about all the messages that the media is sending about women and how it's created this norm dominated by women that comprise something like 5% of the female population. It just made me feel helpless because there isn't anything I can do about how my gender is portrayed. I dunno, I'm kind of going on a rant. But I think the thing I was really struck by was when we started discussing objectification of men, which isn't nearly as bad. But we were focusing on objectifying men as $$ basicallly and how it puts on the pressure of being financially stable. Then I realized, that even with this negative consequence for guys, women were still getting the short end of the stick because not only did it make men seem only useful for their money, it made women seem like they couldn't be stable with some rich man. I dunno. What to do, right?

Special spotlight on Alex, as he is person of the moment. And the only one who is reading my blog right now :). I'll take this opportunity to step away from the egotism that is slowly beginning to consume me. Oh ho, you laugh because you think I'm joking. Seriously, these blogs do wonders for your ego.

But yeah, back to Alex, because that's what this is REALLY all about, right?

Alex is seriously tight. So in honor of him, there is my top 5 favorite things about Alex in no particular order:

1. His sense of humor: Alex is perhaps the funniest person I have ever met. How many people do you know that can turn classic literature into fantastic comedy? Only Alex. He's quick on his feet, so stay alert.

2. His dance moves: The kid can dance. I would know. We kicked it at Bumbershoot during the electronica set. Dancing with Alex is a liberating experience.

3. His literary allusions: I swear, everything that comes out of his mouth has something to do with great literature. He's really just that smart.

4. Alex the artist: Alex draws really awesome pictures. He once drew me a picture of an elephant and a weasel. I know it sounds boring, but it was seriously tight.

5. His pop-culture sensibilities: You'd never think it, but Alex is the biggest pop-culture whore on the face of the planet. How can you not love people like that.

Teehee.

fascinating factoids

Since this blog is by nature sickeningly egocentric, I will indulge myself by writing some more about well me. Here in condensed, easy to swallow form is random information about me, which you may or may not already know.

*CD of the Moment: Incubus' A Crow Left of the Murder
Song of Moment from aforementioned CD: zee deveel
Lyric of the Moment from aforementioned song: "you should be careful what you wish for/ cuz everyone of us has
a devil inside/ you should be careful what you wish for/ cuz all
all of what amounts becomes you."

*Website of the Moment: www.muffinfilms.com
credit where credit's due: Thank you to Alex for introducing me to this great form of entertainment.

*Favorite Color: Green. My favorite color always used to be blue, but I've recently developed a strange obsession with green. I am on the prowl for green shoes. They have been frustratingly elusive thus far.

*Person of the Moment: Alex Polzin. He's the shiznit.

*Pet Peeve of the Moment: Inacessible people. Seriously, they invented phones for a reason.

*Food of the Moment: These amazing cookies from Safeway, of all places. They're incredible, I'm telling you.

*Awesome purchase of the Week: I bought this shirt from the Bon that says "vote 11.02.04" which I think is tight because it says to vote (which you all should do) and also election day is my birthday! So not only does this shirt commemorate my birthday but also the first time I will get to vote! Exciting, I know.

gut check

So who just finished watching the Presidential Debate? That would be me. I'm glad I was able to watch it, especially since I missed the first one because I was stuck at work. I listened on the radio on my way home and was surprised to hear Bush yelling, actually yelling. I only wish that I had been at home to see it. I was shocked to see them standing up during their responses and walking around. Bush looked so short and....stupid. ~giggle~

But down to the real issues. Overall, I thought Kerry did well, but I was surprisingly unimpressed. Especially when he answered the question about abortion. Pretty typical, don't-want-to-offend-anyone, politican type answer. But who can blame him, a politican is what he is. I think Kerry has much more grace than Bush and certainly doesn't come off as ignorant. But I'm so totally and unabashedly biased, it's sick. I shouldn't even be talking about this stuff.

The thing that I've been thinking about for the last hour or so, is how there should be a debate between Laura Bush and Theresa Heinz Kerry. We all know that Theresa would just pulverize poor Laura, but it'd be fun to watch. They say behind every great man there's a great woman, right? So why not see what these women have got in them. Mostly, I'd just like to watch Theresa, cuz she's a Heinz and that's freaking tight. Do you think she uses Heinz ketchup? Do you think she says ketchup or katsup?

for alex's sake

Welcome, one and all, to my humble blog. I do feel kind of dorky having one of these, but Alex told me I should make one and well, Alex is god, so I figured...why not? Also, he said he would read it, and I would consider it a distinguished honor to have someone like Alex read my blog.

So....I'll attempt to make this somewhat interesting. Wish me luck.
